New Backup Solution for Apple Mac Devices Announced

The march of the Mac has showed little sign of abating in people's homes - and with organisations being more elastic in allowing people to use their own devices in the office (well, sometimes, anyway) this throws up the thorny issue of how an Apple device can be integrated into a Windows platform environment for data backup and legal compliance.

Well, Acronis have launched a new product aimed at helping enterprises achieve just that, with Backup & Recovery® for Mac®. The new solution, which is based on ExtremeZ-IP® and Acronis Backup & Recovery, mitigates the business continuity and compliance risks of using a Mac machine for work without disrupting the user and their glossy user interface.

The new solution works by layering the two consituent parts to form a simple yet effective task flow. ExtremeZ-IP provides seamless integration of Macs into corporate IT environments that are powered by Windows® servers and Active Directory®. It allows the OS X® backup tool “Time Machine®” to use a corporate file server as a central store for the Mac archives. Acronis Backup & Recovery can then be used to secure Time Machine vaults to disk, SAN, tape, and/or the cloud for archiving and disaster recovery. Acronis Backup & Recovery also allows these Time Machine backups to be integrated with the central corporate backup strategy.

Apple integration is an important step in Acronis’ move beyond traditional backup and disaster recovery; Mac use within the enterprise is growing at an extraordinary rate as staff push to use their preferred device for tasks, but if Mac files are not protected and available within the enterprise, they will introduce IT management headaches and increased financial and legal risk profiles. Backup & Recovery for Mac uses already proven technologies, including those enabled by its recent acquisition of GroupLogic, to integrate Mac backups into the corporate data protection strategy.
